KOCHI: If the Thiruvananthapuram railway division authorities are to be believed, the railway stations under their jurisdiction will have many modern facilities in near future. Railway sources said that many initiatives were announced by the senior officers during the 65th Divisional railway users’ consultative committee (DRUCC) held on Tuesday. The initiatives include introduction of Jan Ahar, quality food at cheaper rate, at all major stations and catering service management at selected railway stations with the support of Kudumbashree Mission.
“It’s been also announced that 26 trains of Thiruvananthapuram division will soon be provided with the On-board housekeeping service (OBHS), where contracted staff will be travelling in train to clean them at as-and-when-required or when demanded by passengers through SMS.
Also, free medical centres as in Thiruvananthapuram Central will be started in other important stations. Major catering units are to start at Nagercoil Junction, Alappuzha, Aluva and Kayamkulam stations within this year,” said a railway source.
Authorities also announced during the meeting that LED display units will be started in major stations before Onam. The meeting was chaired by Prakash Butani, divisional railway manager (DRM). KS. Jain, additional divisional railway manager (ADRM) and VC Sudheesh, senior divisional commercial manager (SDCM) also spoke. Suggestions for change in time table raised by the members would be considered for implementation, the officers said. The concerns raised by the DRUCC members over the quality of catering would also be addressed immediately.
This year during the summer vacation, the Thiruvananthapuram division operated 57 special trains in April and 88 trains in May (till May 24), to clear extra rush of passengers.
