First liver transplant in Medical College Hospital Thiruvananthapuram a success

The donor became brain dead following ana two-wheeler accident on May 20.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A 60-year-old man from Perumathura became the first ever patient to undergo liver transplantation at any government hospital in Kerala after a 15-hour surgery that ended on Tuesday 10 am at Medical College Hospital (MCH) Thiruvananthapuram.

As per the statement by hospital officials the liver transplantation surgery procedures began by 5 am on Monday. The liver of Dhaneesh Mohan, 17 son of Mohan Raj of Parasalla was transplanted to Basheer, 60 of Perumathura. The donor became brain dead following ana two-wheeler accident on May 20.

A team led by Medical College principal Dr Thomas Mathew coordinated the transplantation procedures. The surgery was done with the help of transplantation unit established at a cost of Rs 7.5 crore. The procedure that cost about Rs 30 lakh in private hospitals was performed at a medical college at a very nominal cost.

With this surgery around 570 people have received organs from around 212 brain dead patients. The team which conducted the surgery included Dr Ramesh Rajan, Bobby Nadeshan, V Venugopal, TU Shabeer Ali. Some doctors from a private hospital at Anayara also assisted the procedure based on an MoU, MCH had with it.
