Wakf land shocker for Panel

98.5 per cent of Wakf lands in Medak district were under illegal encroachment.

Hyderabad: The House Committee constituted to inquire into the Wakf lands in TS on Tuesday noticed that 98.5 per cent of Wakf lands in Medak district were under illegal encroachment. The committee, headed by Bajireddy Govardhan, held a meeting with district officials after visiting the Wakf properties in the district. The panel also received grievances from the public. The committee noted that there was variation in the claim of the Wakf Board and the report submitted by D. Ronald Rose in the extent of Wakf lands in the district.

The Wakf Board has claimed that it had 23,910 acres of land in the district whereas collector informed the committee that as per government records, there was 22,806 acres of Wakf land in the district, and 98.5 per cent of these lands were under encroachment. The committee found that 175 eviction orders passed by the Revenue Divisional Officers in the district were pending since 2014 and the Wakf Board had only one inspector and an attender for the entire district to protect Wakf lands and run its affairs.

The committee, during its visit to Deen Dar Khan masjid in Sangareddy town, noticed that the mosque had 106 acres of prime land in the town which is valued at over Rs 300 crore. The panel found that the existing committee has mismanaged the property by issuing pattas and also developing layouts. Altaf Hyder Rizvi, one of the members of the committee, said that the Wakf Board was directed to constitute five teams to reconcile with the revenue and Wakf records to determine the actual extent of property. He said that the panel ordered the collector to take steps for execution of eviction orders pending from 2004. Mr Rizvi said that
