HBO’s ‘All The Way’ Tops ‘Confirmation’ In Total Viewers But Not ‘Bessie’
Based on the play that won Bryan Cranston a Tony for his performance as President Lyndon Baines Johnson, the debut of HBO’s All The Way didn’t sweep the HBO movie map on May 21 like the 36th President did the electoral map in 1964. But it was up over its immediate predecessors.
With 1.11 million total viewers at 8 PM on Saturday, the 2-hour and 12-minute Jay Roach-directed drama was ahead of Confirmation, which drew 940,000 total viewers when it aired April 16. That Rick Famuyiwa-helmed TV pic with Kerry Washington as Anita Hill centered on the controversy of the Clarence Thomas SCOTUS confirmation hearings of 1991. Although the premium cabler doesn’t lay much emphasis on demo numbers, both HBO movies drew a 0.2 rating among adults 18-49.
The Cranston and Anthony Mackie co-starring All The Way was also up over May 29, 2015’s Nightingale. That drama starring David Oyelowo had 220,000 viewers and a 0.1 rating.
However, the Queen Latifah-staring Bessie, about the sonic powerhouse known as Bessie Smith, still holds the HBO movie crown: The Emmy-winning pic scored 1.34 million viewers with a 18-49 demo rating of 0.4 for its premiere that Saturday night.
