A woman is dead and a teenage girl is in hospital following an early morning shooting at a residence in the city's northeast.
Police were called to a home in the 6900 block of Rundlehorn Drive N.E. at about 12:15 a.m. Tuesday after receiving multiple reports of shots fired in the area.
A woman in her 30s was found dead at the scene and a 15-year-old girl was found injured and taken to hospital in non-life threatening condition.
A short time later, police spotted the suspect in a vehicle in the 4000 block of Whitehorn Drive N.E.
"The suspect fired a single shot and then pulled over," said Duty Inspector Joel Matthews.
He said that the shot was not directed at police and the man was taken into custody without incident.
Two other children, an 11-year-old girl and a three-year-old boy, were found in the car and were taken into police custody.
A section of Whitehorn Drive, where the suspect was arrested, was shut down for most of the morning while police continued their investigation.
Matthews says police have not been called to the home in the past but that the male suspect is known to them.
"No charges have been laid yet," Matthews said. "The suspect is still in custody."
The 15-year-old girl is still undergoing treatment and has not yet been interviewed by police.
A resident who lives in the area where the woman's body was found says she's known the family for a few years. "They were always happy-go-luck, never fighting. This is just amazing," said Leanne Blake.
Blake says she saw the man the night before and he was 'happy'.
"It's quite disturbing to know that it is so close to home. And that he is like that because we've never known him to be like that."
The identities of the suspect and the victims are not being released.
An autopsy on the woman is expected to be completed later on Tuesday and police say the incident is believed to be domestic in nature.
