TWO TEENAGERS from Kothrud area drowned in the Malegaon river in Mulshi taluka of Pune district on Monday. The rescue team of fire brigade fished out their dead bodies on Tuesday morning.
Police have identified the deceased girls as Vinal Ganesh Survase (16) and Ashvini Rajendra Kamble (18), both residents of Azad Nagar in Kothrud.
Police said that a group of youths from Kothrud area, including Vinal and Ashvini, had gone to Malegaon river for a picnic on Monday afternoon. They entered the river, near Sambale village. Meanwhile, the water was released into the river from Mulshi dam. The water level increased while the youngsters were having fun inside the water. Police said that Vinal could not swim and started drowning. Ashvini went for her help and she too drowned along with Vinal.

Receiving the information, local villagers and police rushed to help. Fire brigade was also called, but the firemen could not start the rescue operation due to low visibility during the night hours.
On Monday morning, a fire brigade team, including Rajaram Kedari, Mangesh Milawane, Rajesh Ghadshi, Ravi Bartakke, Rafiq Shaikh, Sachin Jaujale and Omprakash Sarole, started the rescue operation around 9.30 am. However, they found the dead bodies of the two girls.
Police said Vinal had cleared her examination for Class 9 from a local school and was gearing up for SSC. Ashvini was known to be a student of junior college. Police handed over the dead bodies to their family members after a postmortem was conducted on them.
