The smoky charm

The smoky eyes look is like a pair of jeans which is never out of fashion,” says Sabrina Suhail, a Bengaluru-based makeup artist. A classic eye makeup look, the reason behind this trend’s popularity is the fact that it can change your face dramatically, transforming the girl-next-door into a stylish diva.

Once you learn and master the application and blending techniques, the transition will take only a few minutes. You can then have irresistible-looking eyes ready to make heads turn!

The trendsetter makeup look is also popular among Bollywood celebrities including Sonam Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Sonakshi Sinha and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.  “The smoky eyes look is advisable for parties scheduled in the evening,” Sabrina adds. If it is worn in the evening, the appearance is comparatively grander.

This eye makeup looks great when worn with a black or a peach dress. Manjunath Narayan Swamy, another makeup artist, says that colours like brown and gold can be added if it is an Indian attire. However, Sabrina feels, “It is not the colours but the technique that matters. The right technique will always hold good. Every girl loves to own a little black dress (LBD) and this eye makeup, when done right, gives them a bolder look with that.”

But the smoky eyes look is not advisable for small eyes. “Light kajal and eyeshadow works well for small eyes,” highlights Manjunath. In case of medium or large eyes, this look will hold more weightage. Remember to keep the rest of the face clean and apply light or nude lip colour.

Also, the right and simple accessories will suit this look, feels Sabrina. Jazzy and funky accessories will eventually reduce the beauty and highlight. The accessories depend upon the clothes and the hairdo as well. For black or peach dresses, simple pearl accessories look best. Makeup artist Lekha Neelakantappa says, “Both jazzy and simple accesories will look good as long as they go with the dress you wear.”Lekha adds that any face cut would do. “This look is all about blending. It should be done with the right tools.”

Nydile Ranganath, a model and student of Mount Carmel College, says, “I have personally tried the smoky eyes look but failed miserably. It looked like someone punched my eyes.” Though she tried it with colours like blue, green and red, she never received a compliment. Contact lenses with coloured eyeliners work better for her. That’s why mastering the technique matters more than the colours used.
