Mumbai: Inspector general of police (establishment) Rajkumar Vhatkar on Tuesday claimed that only one Indian Police Service (IPS) officer is facing a criminal case and departmental inquiry, while five were facing departmental probes.
Vhatkar issued a statement in response to a report in TOI (Union home ministry: Nearly 50% IPS officers in state facing inquiry).
“The figures given by the honourable minister were from across all the states, and not only for Maharashtra,’’ Vhatkar said.
TOI’s report was based on a reply by Union minister of state for home Kiran Rijiju in response to a question raised in the Rajya Sabha by Congress member Avinash Pande. It was stated that as per information from state cadres from time-to-time and as available with the ministry, 149 IPS officers were facing inquiries, out of which 82 are facing disciplinary proceedings, 49 are facing criminal proceedings and 18 both.
Pande said from the reply given in the RS, it appears that the figures pertain to Maharashtra, since he had raised a question on disciplinary proceedings against IPS officers in Maharashtra.
