Plan for 1,000 houses at former Thorp Arch munitions site

Plans to create a "village" of up to 1,000 new houses on the site of a former West Yorkshire munitions factory have gone on show.

The Rudgate Village development is planned for Thorp Arch trading estate, near Boston Spa, featuring houses, a school and care home.

Tony Blackburn, of developers St Congar Land, said the scheme had been made "significantly smaller" after feedback.

Opponents have said the site is not "a practical place for housing".

Peter Locke, chairman of a group campaigning against the plans, said: "The main problem for people in this rural area is one of access and traffic. The accessibility to public transport is appalling."

But Mr Blackburn said he hoped the reduced size would address concerns and allow for open space, parks and green spaces.

Similar former Royal Ordnance sites had been successfully redeveloped, he said.

The World War Two munitions factory was closed in the 1950s.

A previous application to Leeds City Council for 2,000 houses was withdrawn in December.

An application for the scaled-down plans has not yet been submitted.
