A source close to developments was quoted by TOI as saying, "It can be a great testing ground for what is possible in terms of reaching out to the Indian fan base abroad. It can be made financially viable if a market like the US is explored. Frankly, if the broadcaster finds it appealing then a lot of things fall into place."

The BCCI used to organised Champions League T20 (CLT20) in the month of September in which champion teams from various T20 leagues participated. Since CLT20, failed to become a success it was shelved.

Earlier, the members of the IPL governing council were likely to deliberate on whether the 2017 edition of the cash-rich tourney can be held abroad, the then BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur said last month.

"The IPL governing council will be looking at the venues in India and abroad. We have to check the availability of the venues and prevailing conditions," Thakur told a select gathering of journalists during an interaction at the BCCI's Delhi headquarters.

However, there is no confirmation on whether the next edition of IPL would be held overseas or about a mini-IPL this year.
