Monsoon stays put at Andamans, may not impact arrival in state
PUNE: The south west monsoon is still at Andaman and Nicobar Islands and may not progress further for the next two to three days, the Met department said on Monday . The department officials, however, said it will have no bearing on the monsoon's arrival in Maharashtra. “ As stated earlier, the monsoon is expected to arrive in the state between June 10 and 12,“ they added.
In its latest update on the monsoon, the Indian Institute of tropical meteorology (IITM) said though the circulation over Arabian Sea is likely to strengthen, below normal rainfall is expected over south peninsula by May 26.
“ An increase in rainfall is expected along the west coast between May 22 and June 1. However, normal to above normal activity over Kerala is likely only from June 1to 10,“ it stated.
While parts of North India, including Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and north Rajasthan, experienced duststorm thunderstorm and thundersquall, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said these areas will experience similar conditions on Tues day (May 24) too.
On Monday , the highest temperature in the state was recorded at 45 degrees celsius in Nagpur, which was one degree below the national maximum of 46°C at Titlagarh in Orissa.
The outlook for May 25 and 26 stated that thunder squalls are likely at isolated places over Central Maharashtra, Marathwada and Telangana.“Heavy rain is also expected at isolated places over coastal Karnataka, Kerala and Laks hadweep on Friday ,“ it stated.
“There is no progress in the southwest monsoon till now because no currents are being formed, but the rainfall will increase over coastal parts of Kerala, Maharashtra and Karnataka in the coming days,“ said Mahesh Palawat, chief meteorologist of Skymet Weather.

Dry weather conditions will prevail over west Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha regions between May 24 and 25, the IMD said. “The rainfall will increase under the influence of an upper level cyclonic circulation over the Arabian Sea with a lower level feeble trough over the coast of Maharashtra,“ it added.
IITM's update further stated that the Gujarat coast will also receive rainfall by May 28.Around the same time, the interior districts of Maharashtra, adjacent to the coastal areas, will receive rainfall too.
Rain and thunder showers may occur in Pune between May 24 and 29.
