A Chevrolet Tavera car that two men had hijacked near Rupnagar on Sunday evening was on Monday fished out of the Bhakra Mainline Canal at Suhagheri village in this district.
Senior superintendent of police Harcharan Singh Bhullar said the control room had received the alert in afternoon from people who had spotted the vehicle in the water. “We got there with divers and a crane and were able to pull out the car,” said Bhullar, “We didn’t find anyone dead inside.”
Enquiries at the Rupnagar district transport department suggest that the car belongs to Harpal Singh of Bheora village of that district, while a man named Kashmira Singh was operating it as taxi. Rupnagar superintendent of police (detectives) Harmeet Singh said Himachal Pradesh counterparts had passed on information to the district cops on Sunday night that two men who had hired this taxi from Rupnagar had thrashed the driver on the border of the hill state and Punjab and driven away with the car.
The injured driver had approached Himachal Pradesh Police, which had moved him to hospital. The efforts to trace the carjackers are on.
