Vadodara: Tension prevailed in the Soniwad area of the Godhra town late on Sunday night after an altercation between members of two communities. In the early hours on Monday, unidentified persons pelted some stones in the locality too.
The altercation took place when some youths who were in the area in wake of the Shab-E-Barat were confronted by some who were reportedly drunk.
Heated arguments also took place regarding the incident of a Muslim girl marrying a Hindu youth from the area. One youth was accused of helping the couple and threats were issued to him.
"The couple had married about four months back and are staying together. Their families have accepted the marriage, but some youths raised the issue during the altercation," said V K Nayi, Panchmahal's deputy superintendent of police . He added that both groups were dispersed after the incident.
But around 2am on Monday, unidentified persons pelted stones on some houses in the Soniwad area, forcing police to rush to the locality again. Nayi said that the area was deserted and nobody was on the streets when this incident took place. He added that the miscreants had bolted after pelting the stones. Godhra police has beefed up security in the area in wake of the incident.
Cross complaints were lodged regarding the rioting incident. The Muslim girl involved in the inter-faith marriage also filed a complaint accusing a mob of manhandling a youth and issuing threats.
