Coined lingo rules premium institutes
Ahmedabad: Apart from academics, students of Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, (IIM-A), Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar, (IIT-Gn) and National Institute of Design (NID) use their creativity in coining new lingos for their campus, hostel blocks or place for outings.
The IIT-Gn students refer to their assembly point as 'Panchayat'.
Who coined the name is not known but the lingo is used to an extent that it has almost become an official name.
General secretary of student council at IIT-Gn Shubham Patil said, "We tried to come up with our own hostel names instead of using existing words. We named our hostel blocks as Aibaan, Beauki, Chimair, Duven, Emiet, Firpeal instead of calling them by one letter English alphabet. If you think about the word, you will know that these words carry no meaning and that is what we wanted."
"While naming our hostel blocks, it was also kept in mind that the word should be easily written in 'Devnagri' script. Besides, an internet search on them should not reveal any already established items," he explained.
"Before naming the hostel blocks, we decided that word should not have any meaning. It should be easier to remember or it should not have a strong cultural affinity. The names should not be a typical French, Russian or Arabic words, but at the same time, the sound and pronunciation of the words should be comfortable to Indians," Patil added.
NID-Gandhinaghar student Priyanka Kumari said that there are several unofficial words that have become official at the institute. "A place outside the gate is called Khopcha which is famous among students and faculties as well. Besides, our amphitheatre is known as top of the world because of its height. The parking slot in the institute is popular as airport because it is rarely used," she said.
IIM-A student Varun Shrivastava said though there are no such lingos famous in the institute, they call their outing as 'Tafri'- Urdu synonym for outing, because there is one famous food stall named Tafri.
At Cept, students call their administration centre, double height, while a basement where in famous architect Piraji Sagra used to work is called Sagra basement. Director of the institute - Bimal Patel - is famously known as 'Bim Pat', said a faculty member.
