Council poll: BS Yeddyurappa not for ex-loyalist Somanna again

The party is also reportedly considering Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh president, D.K. Sadhashiva for the Upper House.

Bengaluru: The BJP core committee, which met on Sunday, failed to finalise the party’s candidate for the election to the Upper House from the assembly.

Former minister, V. Somanna ,who is a strong contender and hopes to enter the Upper House for a second term, reportedly had the backing of most of the core committee members, but it appears state party president, B.S.Yeddyurappa is holding up his candidacy as he is keen on the party’s Bengaluru city unit president, Subbanna being fielded instead.

Despite his push for Mr Subbana on the basis of his hard work and organising skills, he did not find favour with the core committee members, who preferred to go with the old and tried horse, Somanna, once a die-hard supporter of Mr Yeddyurappa.

The party is also reportedly considering Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh president, D.K. Sadhashiva for the Upper House, but senior RSS functionaries have not given their approval as yet.

It is believed it could finally opt for Mr. Somanna considering his contribution to the victory of BJP’s K.Shivanagowda Naik from Devadurga Assembly constituency in the recent by- elections and the fact that it will have to rely on the former minister to build its organisation in Chamarajnagar.

Once it has elected its first candidate to the Upper House, the BJP which has a surplus of 15 votes, is considering fielding another candidate with the support of the JD(S), going by party insiders. Former minister, Katta Subramannya Naidu could fit the bill, according to them.
