French Open 2016, Day 2 as it happened: Wawrinka survives, Muguruza struggles, Murray trails overnight

Preview: Andy Murray and defending champion Stan Wawrinka start their French Open campaigns on Monday against a pair of fiery Czechs on a day when Roland Garros plays catch-up after a rain-soaked Sunday. Second seed Murray, a three-time semi-finalist in Paris, takes on 37-year-old Radek Stepanek, the oldest man in the draw and one of a record 51 men over the age of 30 to start the first round. Murray, buoyed by beating world number one Novak Djokovic to the Rome Masters title on clay on the eve of Roland Garros, holds a 6-2 career record over Stepanek.

Scores update:

Second seed Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland defeated Serbia’s Bojana Jovanovski 6-0, 6-2 to ease into the French Open second round.

Radwanska, who was a quarter-finalist in 2013 but lost in the first round to Germany’s Annika Beck last year, goes on to face Caroline Garcia of France.

Garcia won the Strasbourg claycourt title on Saturday.

Monday’s result left Jovanovski, the world number 120, without a win in 2016.

10:38 PM (IST)

At full stretch

Radwanska with one of her usual splits!

10:37 PM (IST)

Second seed Agniezska Radwanska cruises to a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Bojana Jovanovski in 63 minutes.

Two back-to-back upsets on the women’s side:

#108 Shelby Rogers ousts #17 Karolian Pliskova. 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. Pliskova was at one time up a set and a break.

#16 Sara Errani knocked out by Tsvetana Pironkova 3-6, 2-6. Clay court specialist Errani says goodbye to the clay season with zero wins on red dirt (only won in Charleston on green clay).

Simona Halep wins!

Romanian sixth seed Simona Halep, the 2014 runner-up, reached the French Open second round in just 43 minutes.

Halep eased past Japan’s Nao Hinbo 6-2, 6-0 and next plays either Zarina Diyas of Kazakhstan or Carina Witthoeft of Germany for a place in the last 32.

Score update:

Japan’s fifth seed Kei Nishikori reached the French Open second round on Monday with a 6-1, 7-5, 6-3 win over Simone Bolelli of Italy.

Nishikori goes on to face Russia’s Andrey Kuznetsov after finishing off a first-round tie which had been suspended overnight with him leading 2-1 in the third set.

It was a 50th career Grand Slam match win for Nishikori who made the quarter-finals in Paris in 2015.

Ouch!

Grigor Dimitrov loses to (#22) Viktor Troicki 6-2, 3-6, 7-5, 5-7, 3-6.

Fair to say Wawrinka’s coach Magnus Norman was a little relieved after his win.

Meanwhile, Dustin Brown had a very different reaction after his win…

Jack Sock was booed of court after his win. Not a very popular choice with the French Open crowd.

Other marathon five-set wins:

American Jack Sock (#23) wins the fifth set over Robin Haase. 6-3, 7-5, 3-6, 6-7(3), 6-2.

Fan favourite and qualifier Dustin Brown overcomes Dudi Sela. 6-7(7), 6-4, 7-6(5), 4-6, 6-4.

They play each other in the next round.

Watch Wawrinka’s winning match point!

Wawrinka would have made some unfortunate history had he lost.

Defending champion survives! Stan Wawrinka def. Lukas Rosol 4-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4

Wawrinka has the all-important break in the fifth set!

4th seed Garbine Muguruza has avoided an upset at French Open! What a huge relief for the Spaniard who moves into the second round.

Time for some score updates:

Naomi Osaka (JPN) def. Jelena Ostapenko (LAT #32) 6-4, 7-5

Verónica Cepede (PAR) def. Sabine Lisicki (GER) 6-2, 6-2

Sloane Stephens (USA x#19) def. Margarita Gasparyan (RUS) 6-4, 6-3

Barbora Strýcová (CZE #30) def. Lucie Hradecká (CZE) 6-4, 7-5

Polona Hercog (SLO) def. Lourdes Domínguez (ESP) 6-4, 7-6 (7/4)

Hulk mode *ON*

What an incredible point! Wawrinka and Rosol are playing some great tennis now!

Eight seed Milos Raonic wins 6-3, 6-2, 7-6(5) over Janko Tipsarevic!

The Canadian will be happy to get the job done in straight sets. He got a boost into the top 8 seeds after Roger Federer’s withdrawal. Tipsarevic had not won a Tour-level match this year, so no surprises there.

Defending champ Wawrinka in a bit of a pickle: Rosol now leads by two sets, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3.

#30 Barbora Strycova beats fellow-Czech Lucie Hradecka 6-4, 7-5. First win at Roland Garros for Strycova!

Scores update:

Rosol leads (3) Wawrinka 6-4, 1-6, 4-1

Schmiedlova leads (4) Muguruza 6-3, 3-4

Raonic (8) leads Tipsarevic 6-3, 6-2, 5-3

Dimitrov leads (22) Troicki 6-2, 3-6, 4-2

Mayer leads (30) Chardy 4-6, 6-3, 3-2

American Sloane Stephens, seeded 19, wins 6-4, 6-3 over Margarita Gasparyan.

We have the first win of Day 2!

Sabine Lisicki knocked out by #161 Veronica Cepede Royg of Paraguay. 2-6, 2-6 in just 59 minutes.

News Alert:

Play on the second day of the French Open eventually got underway two and a half hours later than scheduled on Monday after more rain lashed a chilly Roland Garros.

But 12 of the 66 ties slated for the day were cancelled after a first day Sunday which saw just 10 matches completed.

Watch how Rosol took the first set over Wawrinka!

Other seeds in trouble:

Dimitrov leads No.22 Troicki 6-2, 1-2

Schmeidlova leads No. 4 Muguruza 6-3

What an eventful start to Day 2!

Another potential upset?

Defending champion Stan Wawrinka drops the first set, 4-6, to Lukas Rosol. The Swiss beat Rosol in Geneva last week in 3 sets.

Grigor Dimitorv and Viktor Troicki, who is seeded 22, are engaged in an entertaining match on Court 3.

Aso, in action is 22-year-old Garbine Muguruza. The 4th seed is in slight trouble in the first set against Anna Karolina Schmiedlova as she trails 1-4. Do we an upset brewing already?

Defending champion Stan Wawrinka has begun his title defence on Court Phillipe-Chatrier. He’s playing “giant-slayer” Lukas Rosol and they are even at 2-all in the first set. Wawrinka only arrived in Paris on Sunday after winning a trophy in his hometown Geneva on Saturday.
