Panaji: A soldier from Amboli in Sindudurg, Maharashtra, was killed fighting terrorists on the border district of Kupwara in North Kashmir on Sunday.
Naik Pandurang Mahadev Gawade’s last rites will be performed Tuesday evening at Amboli village on the outskirts of Goa. His body was to arrive in Goa late Monday night and will be kept at the Military Hospital, Panaji, for the night.
Early Tuesday morning, after a solemn wreath laying ceremony, his body will be taken to Amboli. At Panaji, a wreath will be laid by S K Agarwal, commandant, 2 Signal Training Center, Goa at 6am.
Gawade, 34, was one of the two soldiers severally injured in the fierce encounter at Chug Durgmulla village, on Saturday. He succumbed to his injuries on Sunday. He is survived by his wife and two sons. The operation was successful in eliminating five terrorists. The technically-sound soldier had joined the Maratha light infantry in 2001. tnn
