Pune: NASSCOM Foundation revamps shipping containers into e-learning centres

The foundation claims that these containers can be refurbished in a shorter span of time making them easy to execute in rural areas.

In an innovative method to take digital literacy forward, NASSCOM Foundation, along with Hewlett Packard (HP), has decided to refurbish shipping containers to create digital learning centres. The ninth such centre was inaugurated in Pune on Monday by Aruna Sharma, secretary, department of electronics and IT.

The foundation claims that these containers can be refurbished in a shorter span of time making them easy to execute in rural areas. The containers are mobile and can be transported to such areas easily before refurbishment.

“We are attempting to close the digital divide by helping individuals harness the power of a digital India,” said Ganesh Natarajan, Chairman, NASSCOM Foundation. Speaking to the media, Sharma said she was ‘very happy with this latest initiative’ and she firmly believes that this is the latest step on the path towards forging a digital India.

A similar classroom was simultaneously launched in Mumbai, and the NASSCOM Foundation has previously deployed three other such classrooms in Chennai, Bangalore and Rajasthan in 2015. The launch of this centre means that Pune now has 25 national digital literacy centres-the highest for any city in India.
