Gloucestershire continued to press home their advantage over Northamptonshire on the second day in Bristol.
Northants added 42 runs before they were bowled out for 176, with Craig Miles picking up figures of 5-65.
Chris Dent (93) continued his good form, reaching his fourth half-century of the season before falling in the penultimate over of the day.
Hamish Marshall fell for a duck to Richard Gleeson (2-58) from the day's last ball as the hosts ended on 240-4.
There was further worry for Northants when wicketkeeper Adam Rossington was forced to leave the field with a suspected dislocated finger, leaving opener Ben Duckett to take the gloves.
