Dominica has third highest unemployment rate in Caribbean

looking for a jobNews Americas, NEW YORK, NY, Fri. May 20, 2016 – Joblessness continues to be a big problem in several Caribbean nations. In the Caribbean, youth unemployment rates are among the highest in the world, a recent Caribbean Development Bank report showed. Here are ten Caribbean nations with the highest unemployment rates overall according to latest data:

1: Grenada

Grenada has the highest unemployment rate in the Caribbean region. Data as of 2014 shows that Grenada has an unemployment rate of 28.9 percent the government of Grenada says. This marked a drop from 32.5 percent in 2013. Youth unemployment is over 50 percent.

2: St. Lucia

Coming in at second on the list of Caribbean nations with the most unemployed is St. Lucia which according to latest data has an unemployment rate of almost 25 percent. Unemployment in Saint Lucia rose by 8 percent during the 2008-2014 period, and joblessness among young people aged 15 to 24 rose by 15 percent.

3: Dominica

Dominica has an unemployment rate of 23 percent according to latest data available with young people between the ages 15-24 especially impacted. The rate of unemployment for poor households is 40 percent while non-poor households’ rate of unemployment is 16 percent.

4: St. Vincent and the Grenadines

St. Vincent and the Grenadines has an unemployment rate of 18.80 percent according to latest data. In St. Vincent and the Grenadines, one in four young people between 18 and 29 years is unemployed.

5: Jamaica

Jamaica ranks in the fifth spot on the Caribbean nations with the most unemployed. The unemployment rate for youth is considerably higher at 30.3 percent, and the average unemployment rate for women is double that for men: 18.5 versus 9.3 percent, according to the World Bank.

6: The Bahamas

The Bahamas’ unemployment rate stood at 16.2 percent according to the Bahamas Department of Statistics for 2014, released this year. That’s 31,665 people unemployed and most are women than men.

7: Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic has an unemployment rate of 14.9 percent as of 2015 with more women being among the jobless.  Youth unemployment is in excess of 31 percent.

8: Belize

Belize came in the ninth on the list with an unemployment rate of 14.2 percent as of 2013, the Statistical Institute of Belize says. Most of the unemployed on the island are women.

9: Puerto Rico

Latest data available as of 2013 shows Puerto Rico’s unemployment rate at 11.70 percent with men and young people between the ages 15-24 especially among the jobless.

10: Guyana

Guyana rounds out the top 10 with an unemployment rate put at 11.10 percent as of 2013 that includes a whopping 40 percent of youth unemployment.

Prakash Loungani and Zidong An, writing in the blog: “Unemployment: Troubles Ahead for Emerging Markets” recently offered some much needed advise to governments. They noted that “restoring the health of labor markets in the Latin America and Caribbean region will require a return to stronger growth as well as more targeted measures to tackle barriers in the creation of private sector jobs, which may vary from country to country.”

“In particular,” they added. “It would be useful to provide assistance for job seekers through a mix of placement services, retraining and—in some instances—subsidies to encourage formal sector employment.”

Never trust news from BLOGS. AGES 15-24 REALLY? What are Dominicans doing at that age? 15-24? Think of it people, if we want truthful reports we cant use that range.

Ok two things. DNO What was the motivation for printing this story?? 1. The data supposedly which was used for this survey is 2 years old i.e 2014. But what is even more alarming is my second point 2. The article specifically says the age range utilized was 15 to 24 year olds. The average Dominican and I dare say caribbean person enters university in thier 20s. If you interview a 15 to 18 year old and ask Are you working? They will likely say NO I am still at school…..Is not every rubbish that is printed is scientific and is not every rubbish article you need to reproduce to play on peoples emotions. This data us seriously flawed……

Be it a hundred years old or one day old, it is significant that people become knowledgeable of what id going on in the country!

Roosevelt Skerrit told Dominicans that Dominica is much more better off than all of the Caribbean islands and compare Dominica to America. He stated Dominica was so financially sound that he gave more than ten millions to the government of Antigua, which is a lie, he also said he gave millions of dollars to Anguillia also!

Nevertheless, take a look at the terminal building in Antigua, and compare it to what Skerrit has in Dominica that will give you an example of how wealthy is Dominica.

What he did not tell you all is; no money went out of the treasury, all he did was allow both island government to use Dominica credit! Which Dominica government has also used other islands credit too.

I dont have the time to explain it research it!

Dominica and Dominicans have the potential to build our country but we lack vision. We are still thinking politics and the Government and Opposition not making it better because they are at constant war.

One is in power and being sidetracked by one who craves power, how you want the country to move on when there’s always a battle in the high places of the country. Election is over, suck it up and help develop your island. I’m sick and fed up with Government and opposition story in Dominica and it’s affecting the country big time. Time to wake up and grow up.

    European stats for 2016
The unemployment rate among young persons was higher than the rate for those aged between 25 and 74 in all Member States. In Spain (53.2 %), Greece (52.4 %), Croatia (45.5 %), Italy (42.7 %), Cyprus (35.9 %) and Portugal (34.7 %) youth unemployment rates were particularly high.
According to News Americans Dominica unemployment in that category is 23% ????????

What is your definition of poor households and non-poor households? How did you define poverty? What factors were taken into consideration to determine the unemployment rate for this research?

We need to start provide a proper context from which we can understand what your data means. We may get less negative and ignorant comments if we are provided with relevant and sufficient data to make sense of what is going on. Thank you

If we put. Politics aside, sometimes we can see how to make yourself be self employed. Dominica is among the underdevelop countries and this means that there are so many opportunities to open a business or engage in other avenues.
Just look at some if not most Dominican men , they walk around looking all old and shabby looking ,beard and hair so unkept. When last you had a haircut . Then go to the barber. Job there.
Get a pedicure and manicure , job there , what I mean we have to give ourselves the option of rolling our own economy.
Landscape people yard, job there, sell used car parts, instead of throwing old vehicles, package dried fruit. Sell tours to places of interest , small accommodation for rent. Make shoes, belts and other crafts , paint houses. Water sports , zip lines, and so much more , we must learn to prepare ourselves as a nation,
    Open a gym,
    Detox the body
Be creative . Govt cannot employ everybody. Open day care for elderly, massage palour casino, electronic…

Where is the clientele going to come from?
It is ok to create services, but you need people to pay for the service.
With an unemployment if rate of 23%, people budget and pay for the
necessities and do their manicure/pedicure themselves.
We need to petition the banks to release the passport money that Skerritt have hidden away to the people of Dominica.
It would go a long way in revamping our economy.

What if people cannot pay the barber and all the services of which you speak? Dominica being a agriculture based economy, people don’t or rarely need others to Landscape their yard. If I cut a few yards in Roseau what do you recommend to the guy in the country area? In my opinion Dominica was well structured with Village councils and I think that these councils need to be given a budget with proper mandates for developing their respective areas. The geographical make up of the island of Dominica makes it hard in my opinion to have any real development through central government. When people come to some villages and see nothing going on there, they leave with negatives in mind of Dominica, instead of a country village named Marigot fore instance. Thirty eight plus miles is too far to Roseau for people to be going to look for work. So, if we are going to stop the politics that is a good way to start, push development from Carib Reserve to maybe Woodford Hill. Give the people hope

The place have to have high levels because Dominicans fool people to much when they are working. I have lots of problems getting people to work in Dominica they play so much tricks on u especially when you are not on island. they push you around, work for other people when they are supposed to be working for you, you pay them and nothing gets done… also the skill set is horrible, nothing gets finish right, and your money is spent.

everybody after money NO ONE wants to stay on the job, and while they on the job their phone is in their hands all day on whats app and facebook.

they spend more time doing other things instead of working for the money you pay them.. someone needs to look into these nonsense and then talk about the unemployment on the island. the people are making themselves unemployed because its easier for them to beg……beg beg..

I hope my comments gets seen..

So why does Dominica have ‘non-poor’ and ‘poor’ categories that are not mentioned in the case of the other countries? Also what is the definition of non-poor or poor so we can assess the whole picture. Interesting that the Windward Islands are at the top of the list, a surprise though is Puerto Rico. Anything to defend a totally inept regime. When Dominicans were lining up for the red clinic we were not considered lazy at but instead deserving of the PM’s generosity and love. SMH
I do agree that we seriously need to go back to agriculture after 15 years of total neglect. The reaity is that this government has destroyed the continuity that is needed to develop agriculture. The true remaining farmers capable of propelling the industry are to independent minded to coexist with the MO of the current administration. The little farmers who are still reliant on handouts from the regime does not have the capacity. The government is not prepared to work with independent minds – take for example the banana farmer from Portsmouth who was publically victimized.
The same with other industry professionals.

Has anyone noticed that Antigua, Nevis, Anguilla, Tortolla St. Kitts, and Barbados, Trinidad and Montserrat are not on the lost; and has anyone noticed all of the islands mentioned the populations are in the hundreds of thousands of in comparisons of Dominica where the resident population is less than sixty thousand people?

Shouldn’t it be much easier to create employment for less than a hundred thousand people, than over a hundred thousand? If the claim Skerrit made that Dominica is much better off economically than the rest of the Caribbean, or the world for that mater; how Dominica is third on the list.

Another observation is that unemployment is highest on the islands which economy depends on Agriculture, Antigua and St. Kitts are not on the list, however, there are no banana plantations on either of the two islands. Food for thoughts!

    • Wow
      May 24, 2016

      • Francisco Etienne-Dods Telemaque
        May 24, 2016

Yes, indeed the residence population of Dominica right now is less than sixty thousand people, I do no care how much retarded you think I am, had you not read the word retarded in the comments I wrote in reference to the child murder in Grand Bay, you would not know that word existed!

If you wish to prove that the population of Dominica is more than sixty thousand people, all you have to do is tally the amount of people who voted in the last election, you may come near to thirty thousand votes, or nearer to fifty thousand votes.

There are more than seventy thousand Dominicans alive including those Skerrit sold citizenship to, nevertheless anybody who believe there are seventy thousand people living in Dominica as claimed is a fool!

They keep claiming seventy thousand people for more than thirty years, now, so that should enlighten you! If you think I am crazy you are an idiot!

I live in Antigua and it’s hard to get a job there but the people create the’r own little businesses, they get food from Dominica and sell the’r provisions and make money. Why can’t Dominicans get more into farming and sell to those islands who do not have. There are always people in Antigua who are willing to buy and resell. Dominicans should never be out of jobs in this self sustaining country.

Everything about our government is fraudulent. Notice that all the other governments provide an overall unemployment rate. For example Grenada’s unemployment rate is 28.9 %. But the government of Dominica is issuing 23% among young people between the ages of 15-24. They are using the NEP to buffer the real unemployment rate. So what about the people from age 25- 55?
Then we have unemployment among the poor is 40% among the poor and among the non poor is 16%. What the heck. What is the overall unemployment rate? Say 10% of the ages 15-24 fall in the poor bracket and 5% non-poor then unemployment is already 38% and that puts us at #1.

Suggest the rule out the rest of the Windward islands, Guyana, and Jamaica, an disclosed which of the other islands of the Caribbean where people are staving, and crave Dominica agricultural produce for them to survive.

All we been asking for is increase productivity, private sector growth and some inovation. How can we go anywhere when we hell bent on begging and makibg money by questionable means. Our policy for sound economic growth is non existence. A country cannot be developed by a government, whoes only economic plan have been get grants and loans from whoever willing to give and having no means ti pay it back. Bottom line is policy makers in the region are sub standard and too focused on how long they stsy in power. Secondly our population is to weak when it comes to holding Government responsible.

Most of the labor party supporters are illiterates and the few available jobs go the “not so illiterate” ones. So yes, Dominica is at the bottom of the barrel which has no bottom when comes to unemployment. Blame Scare-it!!!!!

  37. May 23, 2016

is it only a government who create work. Well the same America NY times ask them how many of their young men are working, Dominicans should get together like the Indians and start a factory with coconut make oil and soap . Koolomonos

I think “UWP operatives” wrote to the CDB so they could publish such reports. This cannot be true. Money flowing like water in Soufriere these days and even Ian Pinard say unemployment rate down there is just 2 percent.

UWP operatives are at it again.

This among other economic issues is what Dominican politicians should be talking about. Instead i have a PM that supports an accused ….; an weak opposition that won’t bring it to the government and a people who applaud when idiots go on platform and ridicule the issue of child abuse and a women’s right to choose…We been through our highs and lows but for the first time i must say “I am disappointed in my country.”

Yo Skerritt I’m sure you will spin this story and brag that Dominica’s unemployment rate is not the worst in the Caribbean.Ever since you took office of PM everything keeps on going backwards. All sectors of the economy are in decline. The Europeans used shiny trinkets to fool our forefathers in Africa and you have used bitumen on the roads to fool the Dominican people who support you.For sure when bitumen is wet from the rains in Dominica it does shine. After 15 years you should have been able to show better.By the way when are you going to conclude the deal to purchase Colgate Palmolive/DCP.? Roosevelt, you are the worst thing that happened to my beloved country,Dominica
