In a tribute to police horse Shaktiman, who was injured during a protest and died on April 20, a larger-than-life statue of the equine is set to be installed in Police Lines here. The nine-feet-high and eight-feet-wide statue of the Kathiawari horse would be unveiled in the first week of June, police officials said.

The person entrusted with the job is 55-year-old sculptor Dhyan Singh Negi, whose repertoire boasts of a famous statue of a deer in Harshil Army camp and another statue at Uttarkashi Police Lines.

Negi arrived in the state capital on April 28 from Bagauri village in Uttarkashi district and has already completed 60% of the work on the statue. The stately figurine at nine feet will be much higher than the white-coloured horse, which stood 5 feet and 8 inches tall.

While Negi did not get a chance to meet Shaktiman, it has in no way dampened his enthusiasm about the task. "The statue will be made from cement and painted white," said Negi, who has already spent many laborious hours on the project.

To keep alive the memory of the horse, which grabbed the attention of the country after photos of its broken, bleeding leg went viral on the internet, Dehradun Police have already named an under-construction petrol pump inside Police Lines premises after Shaktiman.

Talking to TOI, SSP (Dehradun) Sadanand Date, said, "It was decided that there should be a statue of Shaktiman to help us remember the horse which was loved by everyone. The statue will be installed outside the badminton court in Police Lines."

During a protest outside the state assembly on March 14, a group of BJP members led by Mussoorie MLA Ganesh Joshi had allegedly hit Shaktiman. In the commotion which broke out, the horse lost control and fractured its leg. As the condition of the horse deteriorated, experts were left with no other option than to amputate the hind left leg. It died during another surgery.
