With Louis van Gaal’s departure from Manchester United now official and likely to be followed by the appointment of Jose Mourinho, football’s worst kept secret has finally been acknowledged by the relevant parties

Few could argue that, leaking the news of Louis Van Gaal’s imminent and long overdue dismissal as Manchester United manager just moments after he secured the club their first piece of silverware of the post Alex Ferguson era was in poor taste.

United’s FA Cup final triumph over Crystal Palace felt trivial in the aftermath of the development and, without doubt, the Dutch coach and his players deserved better.

But football is a ruthless business and Van Gaal has failed to deliver on his remit, while employing arguably the most insipid brand of football in the club’s history. Don't shed too many a tear for the 'Iron Tulip ' as he's expected to receive a £5m severance package. The Mourinho era should make for far more compelling viewing, both on and off the pitch.

Twitter has reacted with the appropriate speed and volume to the news that United will dismiss a second manager in two years.
