79% turn out for Haryana MC poll

CHANDIGARH:Polling for 14 municipal councils and 28 municipal committees and in a ward each of the Panipat, Rewari and Kalanaur urban bodies concluded peacefully today.



Chandigarh, May 22

Polling for 14 municipal councils and 28 municipal committees and in a ward each of the Panipat, Rewari and Kalanaur urban bodies concluded peacefully today. Haryana State Election Commissioner Rajeev Sharma said of the 13.86 lakh voters, 10.9 lakh exercised franchise (79 pc). 

Counting began after the polling ended. A total of 790 wards of municipal councils and 454 wards of municipal committees are reserved for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Caste women, Backward Classes and women. 

For the 354 wards of 14 municipal councils, 1,730 candidates, 997 men and 733 women, are in the fray. For the 436 wards of 28 municipal committees, 1,608 candidates, 861 men and 747 women, are in the race. In all, 6,780 officials and 132 duty magistrates/supervisors were put on election duty. — TNS
