Suspect Runs Out Through Haveli Gate, Caught By Locals
Ahmedabad: Late on Saturday night, a robbery suspect, in lawful custody of the crime branch, tried to escape when he was being brought into Gaekwad Haveli. Possibly aware about higher level of security following the death of constable Chandrakant Makwana within crime branch premises, the suspect took no chances and tried to run out through the Gaekwad Haveli gate, as soon as the car carrying him neared the crime branch.
Locals, however, chased and caught him from Raigadh within 15 minutes of his daring escape, and handed him over to police personnel who began the chase.
According to sources, a crime branch team probing a highly dangerous robbery had lawfully detained the suspect from Idar in North Gujarat.
Sources confirmed that the suspect was brought in a white-coloured private vehicle to the crime branch office at about 11.45pm on Saturday.
"However, just as the car stopped near the first barricade inside the Gaekwad Haveli gate, the suspect who was seated on the back seat, pushed the constable and jumped out of the car. The suspect, dressed in a white shirt and cream-coloured pants ran towards Raikhad," said a crime branch official.
The crime branch team was taken aback and ran after the suspect. "Locals also joined the chase, and in the end nabbed him from near the municipal school in Raikhad. The suspect was then brought to the crime branch office," said a senior crime branch official.
According to locals the suspect was running on bare feet, and if local boys did not join the chase it would have been difficult for police to nab him.
"There was a lot of chaos on the road around midnight, but the good thing is that the suspect was nabbed within minutes," said an eyewitness.

Exactly a month ago, Manish Balai, accused of bludgeoning constable Makwana to death within crime branch, had escaped the highly fortified premises by scaling its walls.
However, this time around, crime branch constables and locals chased down the suspect about 150 meters from the gate. DCP, crime branch, Deepan Bhadran, said the suspect was in lawful custody of the crime branch, and they were able to nab him from outside the Gaekwad Haveli campus within 15 minutes. "The suspect who fled was in lawfull custody of the crime branch. We are questioning him in some very serious offences of robbery and house break-ins," added DCP Bhadran.
It is noteworthy that Balai was also nabbed by crime branch sleuths on the same day of his escape from Karjan railway station, as he was trying to flee to his native, Jaipur in Rajasthan. It is important to note that after constable Makwana was brutally murdered in the crime branch, a three-layer security was deployed with barricading at three places, two CCTV cameras at the first barricade, and a barbed fence fitted on the boundary wall.
