: Speculations are going the rounds on who would be the next Mayor of Kozhikode Municipal Corporation. The outgoing Mayor V.K.C. Mammad Koya, who been elected to the State assembly from the Beypore constituency, put in his papers on Friday.

As per speculation by the media and some party leaders, three councillors have been short-listed for the post — the former Mayor, Thottathil Raveendran, Education standing committee chairman of the Corporation council M. Radhakrishnan and Health standing committee chairman K.V. Baburaj.

Mr. Raveendran has already served four terms as councillor since 1979 and was the Mayor in 2000-2005. He was also chairman of the Guruvayur Devaswom Board. K.V. Baburaj too has around 20 years experience in the council while M. Radhakrishnan was the chairman of the Welfare standing committee in his last term as councillor and was earlier a member of the Kozhikode district panchayat.

Deputy Mayor Meera Darshak brushed away the speculations and said the party (CPI-M) would decide the Mayor within two weeks.

When contacted, District Secretary of the party P. Mohanan said the Mayor post would be discussed later.
