Palanpur: One person was killed and eight others injured when an on-going feud between two families of Gavariya family took an ugly turn in Salal village, some 10 km from Prantij in Sabarkantha district, on Sunday.
Police said as many as 14 people from the near-by Chitroda village attacked the family of Viramji Gavariya with sticks and other weapons.
Gavariya's 42-year-old son Udaji died on the spot due to heavy bleeding after he was hit with sticks.
Among the eight injured, five are women who have been shifted to government hospitals in Himmatnagar and Prantij.
TB Rathod, investigating officer, Prantij police station, told TOI: "The families have been at loggerheads for some time now. Viramji's daughter was married to a person in Chitroda. However, she returned to her father's house after her husband died. Her in-laws were insisting on taking her back to their house but she always refused."
Sources said that the woman had allegedly eloped and married one Lalji Gavariya. After getting to know about this, her in-laws were angry with Viramji's family and often accused them of encouraging their daugther to remarry.
Meanwhile, police bandobast has been tightened in the village to avoid any escalation of tension.
