Fractured Prune Doughnuts opens in Gilbert

Fractured Prune Doughnuts' Gilbert store is now open, its seventh location in Arizona. Let’s pause a moment to ponder the curious name.

It’s a salute to Prunella Shriek, an unfortunately named lady in the 1800s who competed in what were traditionally men’s sports, even as she aged into her 70s. Just as famous as her achievements was her knack for getting magnificently injured, be it in ice skating, skiing, tennis or ping pong, earning her the nickname "Fractured Prunella."

So, the Maryland-based pastry company “celebrates her legacy with a doughnut as individual as the person ordering it,” according to the Fractured Prune Doughnuts website.

Regardless of the stretch in that story, Fractured is popular for serving made-to-order doughnuts, doughnut breakfast sandwiches, doughnut ice cream sandwiches and specialty coffees.

Plain cake doughnuts can be dressed with a combination of more than 19 glazes and 14 toppings. Customers can choose flavors like Blackberry Cobbler, a blackberry glazed doughnut topped with crushed graham crackers and powdered sugar; or a Ms. Prunella, glazed with mixed berry and sprinkled with cinnamon sugar.

But really, guests are encouraged to create their own concoctions from glazes such as key lime, marshmallow or caramel. Then, they can add rainbow sprinkles, sea salt and crumbled bacon.

There’s everything, it seems, except prune flavor.
