Politics and Wealthy Zamindars.

WEALTHY Zamindars and relatives of Indian Rajas and Maharajas form the aristocracy of India. But they have seldom taken an active part in the political leadership of the people. From their early training up to manhood they are watched and specially brought up so as not mix freely with the intellectual middle class. Under these circumstances they find it easy to support bureaucratic officials rather than throw in their lot with the bulk of the people in their endeavour to advance the public welfare. In connection with the Madras Provincial Conference, prominent attention is drawn to the speech of the Chairman of the Reception Committee, the Raja of Ramnad and his advanced views of politics, education and other questions. On account of his leadership many other zamindars also took part in the conference and most of them supported the various resolutions passed.
