Aurangabad: UP cadre IPS officer Aparna Kumar, who is daughter in-law of late Janeshwar Singh of Malwa Dihuri village in Aurangabad district, has become the country's first civil servant to scale Mount Everest in her third attempt. She achieved the feat on May 21.
Aparna's in-laws family now resides at Club Road Colony in Aurangabd.
Aparna, posted as DIG telecom in Lucknow, had earlier scaled Mount Vinson Massif, the highest peak in Antarctica on January 17, 2016 and Mount Elbrus in Europe.
With Vinson Massif under her belt, Aparna has now scaled 5 of the 7 summits considered the most challenging for mountaineers in the world.
The tireless mountaineer has set higher goals for herself later this year. She also plans to scale Mount McKinley in Alaska in July-August. An avalanche in 2014, and an earthquake in 2015 had prevented Aparna from scaling the Everest in her earlier attempts. In March 2015, she was conferred the Rani Lakshmi Bai Puraskar by UP chief minister Akhilesh Yadav for her achievements and for being a role model to women. On eve of the Republic Day in 2016, Aparna was also awarded the special DGP Commendation Disc for her achievements after having scaled Mount Aconcagua, the highest peak of South America.

A graduate of the National Law College in Bengaluru, Kumar was on an expedition to scale Mount Everest in April last year when the earthquake hit Nepal. A fascination for mountaineering triggered her to enroll, first, for a month-long basic mountaineering course at Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports in Manali in October 2013, and then an advance course in July 2014.
Talking to TOI, Aparna said, "Being an IPS officer, initially it was tough to explore her dreams in mountaineering. But the UP government and senior officials of the department helped her a lot."
Aparna husband Sanjay Kumar, who is currently posted as DM Allahabad says, "She had unfurled the national tricolour and flag of UP police at the summit. It was aproud moment for the nation and UP police.
