Jaipur: A 59-year-old constable – due for retirement in two months – lost his life while on duty in Churu on Friday night. Constable Vijay Kumar Yadav was chasing some criminals who had broken a police barricade when the SUV he was driving overturned, leading to his death on the spot. Head constable Mahendra Singh, who was with him in the vehicle, was seriously injured.
He has been referred to a hospital in Hisar. His condition is serious, but stable, police said.
Vijay and Mahendra were deputed at Sankhu Fort police outpost as part of the police's night patrolling drive across the district. Senior police officers had ordered all the police stations to carry out checking of vehicles passing through their jurisdiction till late night.
"Vijay and Mahendra saw a Scorpio approaching towards them. They signalled it to stop. The driver slowed down the vehicle, but did not stop at the police barricade and instead sped off. The two policemen had a narrow escape," said a police officer. The officer said that the two policemen started chasing the SUV in a Bolero. "After half kilometre's chase, the Bolero overturned. Vijay was killed on the spot, while Mahendra sustained serious head injuries," said the officer.
A back-up police team arrived at the spot from Hameerwas and nearby police stations and rushed the policemen to a hospital. Vijay was declared dead on arrival. The police have launched a massive search for the Scorpio, but to no avail. The car could not be traced.
Many policemen are falling prey to growing fearlessness among criminals, especially in the state's Shekhawati region. On April 22, a head constable was seriously injured when some criminals attacked him with sticks and iron rods in Churu's Sadulpur town. The head constable was rushed to a hospital in Churu and then referred to SMS Hospital in Jaipur due to his critical condition.
On April 19, some goons mercilessly beat up and then kidnapped a head constable in Churu's Sidhmukh area just because he told them to verify their credentials.
In March, a constable was shot dead, while another was critically injured when some criminals opened fire at them at a police barricade in Nagaur district. It later turned out that the gang involved in the shoot was associated with Anandpal Singh. It is also suspected that Anandpal Singh himself was in the car that the criminals left behind after the shooting.
