Former Congress leader Jagmeet Singh Brar on Saturday took out a rally at the historic Chappar Chirri. The event saw a responsive audience to Brar’s high decibel and emotive 50-minute long speech.

Brar was earlier expelled by the Congress for alleged anti-party activities. At his rally, Brar called the people to rise against his former party and the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD).

Brar reminded the audience of the warrior Banda Singh Bahadur and his war against aristrocracy, something that he claimed is what was happening now.

Brar sought an apology from Punjab Congress president Capt Amarinder Singh and Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal stating that their forefathers had sided with the British instead of participating in the struggle for freedom.

“Amarinder’s forefathers were rewarded with titles like raasi-e-khal iftekhwab, daulat-e-englishia, farzan-e-dilkand and several others because they helped the British even when the countrymen were fighting against them for independence,” claimed Brar. “Badal’s forefathers were also known for mixing poison in the langar during Jaitu Morcha launched for freedom of gurdwaras from British.”

Festive offer

Alleging that Amarinder had accepted Rs 10 crore before the previous election from accused drug lord Jagdish Singh Bhola, Brar also took a swipe at the SAD. “Sukhbir Singh Badal and his brother-in-law Bikram Singh Majithia are behind the sale of chitta (a synthetic drug)… When I had sought a CBI probe into the drug racket by filing a case in high court, the judges wondered why I was pushing for this when senior party leader Amarinder was against a CBi probe.”

He announced a farmers’ movement in which he will be going to the houses of debt-ridden farmers and prepare a database to submit to the Prime Minister so that nobody would have to auction their land.

Calling the May 19 Assembly results in the four states “the final funeral” of the Congress, Jagmeet said the party was completely routed from the country. He said that he was sacked when he advised AICC president Sonia Gandhi for a “manthan” after the party got only 44 seats in the Lok Sabha in 2014 general elections.

Brar did not touch the Aam Aadmi Party, an outfit he has been praising for quite some time now. He said his movement would continue in Punjab and he would be traveling to rest of 59 segments in the coming days.

‘Feel sorry for Brar’

Reacting to expelled colleague Jagmeet Brar’s allegations, Capt Amarinder Singh Saturday said that he sympathises with Brar and that he really did not care as to what he said at the rally.

“I can understand the state of mind of a person who has been politically orphaned and is desperately loitering in the wilderness,” Amarinder said. “The man seems to have lost both, peace and balance of mind.”
