‘New species may be easier to spot with fewer watering holes’
Yeoor forest officials are expecting to come across new species of birds and animals during their 24-hour animal census that started on Saturday evening.
With the number of watering holes coming down to 50 per cent, officials believe it will be easier to spot new species that will approach the reservoirs for water. Every bird and animal needs water and will approach one of the 20 watering holes in the forest.
We will be monitoring these fresh water reservoirs for 24 hours from 5pm on Saturday to Sunday. We hope to have sightings of new species,” said Sanjay Waghmode, range forest officer of Sanjay Gandhi National Park’s (SGNP) Yeoor range.
“The dates of the census are always planned on Buddha Purnima as the moon is the brightest on that night,” he added.
