Heatwave to grip Odisha from Sunday after cyclone Roanu
BHUBANESWAR: After rain relief of a couple of days triggered by tropical cyclone Roanu, Odisha is once again under the grip of heatwave conditions on Saturday. Met office has predicted severe heatwave condition to prevail across the state in the next few days from Sunday.
"Due to advection of hot air from north and central India will lead to heatwave condition across Odisha.
Maximum temperature may go above 46 degree Celsius in the next few days in the state and the condition is likely to continue till May 28," said director of IMD's Bhubaneswar Centre, Sarat Sahu. The IMD made this forecast after cyclone Roanu over the Bay of Bengal became weak, and recurved from Odisha coast towards Bangladesh for landfall.
Western Odisha singed under acute heatwave with Bhawanipatna recorded the maximum temperature of 44 degree Celsius on Saturday followed by 43.5 degree at Titlagarh and 43 degree at Balangir. Seven places recorded temperature above 40 degree Celsius while temperature in coastal districts remained within 36 degree Celsius.
Balikuda in Jagatsinghpur district during past 24 hours by Saturday morning recorded highest 210 mm rainfall, according to IMD report. The other places recorded major rainfall during this period include Tirtol (190 mm), Astaranga (180 mm), Kujanga (170 mm) and Paradeep (160 mm).
The Special Relief Commissioner's office has confirmed 20 deaths due to sunstroke death while 192 complaints of heatstroke deaths have been reported in the state so far this season.
