New Spock's Tribute As Star Trek Trailer Shown

The actor who took over the role of Spock in the Star Trek franchise reboot in 2009 has paid tribute to Leonard Nimoy at a fan event to celebrate the late star's life.

Zachary Quinto told hundreds of fans that without Nimoy, who played the half-human half-Vulcan first officer of the USS Enterprise for more than four decades, Star Trek would not have had enjoyed such longevity.

Speaking of Nimoy, who died last year aged 83, Quinto said that the cast for the new film "showed up to work in the spirit of celebrating his life".

He described his contribution to the sci-fi franchise as "indelible".

As the cast members and directors from the new trilogy gathered for the 50th anniversary celebration of Star Trek, Paramount Pictures unveiled a new trailer for the upcoming release of Beyond.

It also announced the movie would be premiered in San Diego on 20 July.

A ceremony was also held to name the road outside Stage 31 - where much of the original Star Trek series was filmed - Leonard Nimoy Way.

The original Star Trek, which first aired in 1966, told the story of the crew aboard the Enterprise, a spaceship which explored the galaxy.

It developed a huge following and became a cultural phenomenon, turning its stars - most notably Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner - into household names.

The reboot films have breathed new life into the long-running series.

A new television series is due for broadcast in the United States next year.
