Ro-Ro ship service from Mangaluru to Gujarat stopped
Mangaluru: The roll-on roll-off (Ro-Ro) service, wherein trucks were ferried in ships bet ween New Mangalore Port (NMP) and Hajira in Gujarat, has come to a halt due to the poor response from stakeholders. The Ro-Ro service, which was launched in October last year, was stopped after 18 voyages.
An official attached with the NMP said they are upset with the stoppage of the service as they had put in their best efforts for it and had made all necessary arrangements for the service.
However, NMP is in talks with some ship owners who are interested in starting the service, a source said.
The Ro-Ro service via ships was a boon to truckers as it saved fuel, wear and tear of vehicles and on the environment front, it reduced pollution. Apart from this, drivers were spared of toll amounts, traffic blocks, among others. Truck owners were also happy with the service as it was much cheaper to ferry their trucks on ships than on road, said Gabriel Sydney, manager, Alvares and Thomas, who were steamer agents and stevedores. tnn
