Ludhiana: Angered over the promotion of the SHO who was named by 26-year-old Inderpal Singh Ahuja in his suicide note on Facebook, the family of the deceased has said it would now be approaching chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and requesting him to intervene in the case in which no arrest has been made so far.
In the list of promotions released by Punjab Police on Thursday, SHO Davinder Chaudhary was promoted from the post of inspector to deputy superintendent of police.
He was one of the three cops against whom Inderpal had levelled allegations of demanding bribe, blackmail and held responsible for his committing suicide. Though police commissioner Jatinder Singh Aulakh was not available for comment, deputy commissioner of police Dhruman H Nimbale said they would write to higher authorities to either keep the promotion provisional or to withdraw it.
Though Chaudhary was not made an accused in the case, two other cops named by Inderpal in his suicide declaration on Facebook — assistant sub-inspector Buta Singh and head constable Swaran Singh — were booked by the police. The mother of Inderpal, Kuldeep Kaur, described Chaudhary's promotion as "complete injustice". "Police have not arrested a single person, even after registering a case against two of the cops. The truth is that all three should be arrested," she said.
On April 29, Inderpal committed suicide by jumping before a train. Before taking the extreme step, Inderpal wrote a suicide note on his Facebook profile, alleging that Chaudhary, Buta Singh and Swaran Singh were harassing him and threatening to implicate him in a false case.
Kaur accused the police of protecting the cops by transferring the case to the state vigilance bureau. "We will soon meet the CM and pray to him for justice. We will do anything for justice. If needed, we will go to the Supreme Court," she said.
He had also alleged that the officers took Rs 1.25 lakh from him and were harassing him for more. Inderpal alleged that the police officers were investigating a case of murder committed by gangster Gaurav Sharma, alias Goru Bacha, and in that case the officials called him and were harassing him for money.
Following the allegations an inquiry was marked by police commissioner Jatinder Singh Aulakh. On the basis of the probe report, a case under Prevention of Corruption Act was registered against Buta Singh and Swaran Singh. The report stated that SHO Davinder Chaudhary was not directly involved. However, no arrest has been made in the case and the case has been transferred to the vigilance bureau.
