Cane access roads upgrading works has begun in Labasa.

It is expected to be completed before the Labasa Sugar mill opens for the 2016 crushing season in mid June.

This was confirmed by the Sugar Cane Growers Council chief executive officer Sundresh Chetty.

“The Government had allocated $3 million for upgrading of cane access roads.

“The work began first in Labasa since the Labasa mill will be the first in Fiji to begin crushing season,” Mr Chetty said.

“We would like to urge road committees to work together with the contractors to ensure work is done before the harvesting season begins.”

There are seven sectors in Labasa and three sectors in Seaqaqa.

In these ten sectors there are 975 cane access roads.

Meanwhile, Memorandum of Gang Agreement (MOGA) forms are being distributed to cane harvesting gangs for preparation of harvesting.

“Gangs are expected to have their Annual General Meetings (AGM).

“And fill in the MOGA forms before submitting it to FSC sector offices,” he said.

“We are liaising with Land Transport Authority and Ministry of Transport for the concessions for cane lorry operators.

A soon as this will be finalised, the lorry operators will be informed accordingly.”
