Rane son gets judicial custody in kidnap case
MUMBAI: A Chiplun court on Friday remanded former Congress MP Nilesh, the son of former chief minister Narayan Rane, in magisterial custody for his alleged involvement in a kidnapping and assault case.
Following a complaint lodged by Congress worker Sandeep Sawant, the Thane police had on April 24 registered a criminal case against Nilesh, his aides Tushar Panchal and Manish Singh.
Nilesh’s anticipatory bail application was rejected by the Ratnagiri sessions court, subsequently, he approached the Bombay high court. He had later withdrawn his application after the court directed him to surrender before the police on or before May 23.
According to reports, since Sandeep did not attend a meeting on the issue of Maratha reservation convened by Nilesh, the former MP along with his supporters went to his house, dragged him out and took him to Mumbai. Sandeep was beaten up in the car by Nilesh’s supporters.
On Friday, after Nilesh surrendered before the Chiplun police, he was produced before the court. The police had sought his custody for seven days, however, the court rejected the plea and sent him to magisterial custody. After Nilesh’s bail application was rejected, he moved the sessions court, which is expected to hear his plea on Monday.
Nilesh’s arrest is being viewed as a major setback for Narayan Rane, who made several attempts to pacify Sandeep. Narayan Rane had called on him when he was in hospital.
