Police said Friday morning that a fifth man had been charged in connection to the 2015 stabbing death of Deng Mathew Garang Tong.

Edmonton police said Keith James Phillips, 31, was arrested Thursday, May 19.

He’s facing a charge of first-degree murder, and three counts each of attempted murder and aggravated assault.

The investigation started after police were called to a weapons complaint in the area of 102 Street and 107 Avenue at about 3:30 a.m. on Sunday, February 22, 2015.

When officers arrived, they found two males suffering from stab wounds.

Their investigation led officers to an apartment at 103 Street and 107 Avenue, when they found 23-year-old Tong, also suffering from stab wounds.

He was treated on the scene to hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Also charged in this case are Jonathan Piche, 32, Clinton Robert Kailek, 26, Billy Joe Nelson, 37, and Tyler Strathdee, 27.
