Digvijay reiterates call for ‘major overhaul’ of Cong; party says all suggestions to be considered by CWC
New Delhi, May 20 (UNI) A day after he stirred a controversy by suggesting a ‘major surgery’ in the Congress after the poor show in the assembly polls in four states and one UT, including a defeat in Kerala and Assam, senior party leader Digvijay Singh today reiterated his call for a major overhaul in the organisation and its campaign strategy even as the party put the onus on the Congress Working Committee. Speaking to a news channel, Mr Singh lamented that the much needed overhaul in the party that was required after its debacle in the 2014 Lok Sabha poll did not take place. ‘’The much-talked about overhaul after the party's 2014 national election defeat never took place,’’ Mr Singh told NDTV in an interview. Talking to NDTV, Mr Singh suggested a major overhaul in campaign strategy and social media. "We have not kept up with the times. We have lost the battle on social media," Mr Singh said. The comments by the senior leader came a day after he said on Twitter that there was need for a ‘major surgery’ in the party. "We have done enough introspection, shouldn't we go for a major surgery,’’ Mr Singh said soon after Congress president Sonia Gandhi said the party would introspect into reasons for the losses in the assembly polls. Mr Singh said he stands by his comments made yesterday. In the interview, Mr Singh admitted that difference between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi is that Mr Modi has got the gift of the gab. "Even Indira Gandhi was never a great speaker, even Jawaharlal Nehru. But Indira Gandhi and Nehru had the vision - when they spoke, everyone listened. As far as Rahul Gandhi is concerned, he is developing,"the senior congress leader said. Reacting to the comments by Mr Singh senior Congress leader and AICC spokesperson P C Chacko said,''all suggestions from senior leaders of the party are welcome. But they should be given in the party forum- the Congress Working Committee. He said the Congress Working Committee would meet in the near future to introspect on the party’s loss in Kerala and Assam and consider all the suggestions.’’ On the comment by many leaders that time for introspection was over, Mr Chacko said,’’introspection is an ongoing process. He needs to introspect to find out the reasons for the defeat of the party.’’ Senior party leader Shashi Tharoor, reacting to the loss of the Congress yesterday, had said ''the time for introspection is now past. Time for action has come…It is time to move and it is time to make some visible changes that the world and the country can see because for a couple of years after 2014, the process for consideration, reflection, introspection and so on has been taking place. It is now time for the leadership to draw on the conclusion from their introspection and take necessary action.’’ UNI AR AE 1926
