Rahul Dravid the perfect choice for India coach, but he's got to have the desire: Duminy

JP Duminy has joined the likes of Sunil Gavaskar and Harbhajan Singh in voicing his support for Rahul Dravid for the position of the head coach of the Indian cricket team.

According to a report on The Telegraph , The South African all-rounder, who is currently playing for Delhi Daredevils (mentored by Dravid) in the ongoing Indian Premier League — praised the Indian batting legend’s man-management skills, but he reiterated that Dravid must have the desire within him for the role.

“If Rahul himself wants the job… he’s first got to have that desire,” Duminy was quoted as saying in the report.

“When a mentor or coach deals with international players, it’s not about teaching technique, but getting the best out of everybody. Rahul is aware of what is required, knows how to get the best out of the franchise’s players,” added Duminy.

The likes of Gavaskar, Harbhajan and former Australia captain Ricky Ponting have also lent their support for the same, as have the BCCI-appoined committee, comprising of the legendary trio of Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman.

“I don’t think BCCI will find many better candidates than someone like him (Dravid). If he’s interested in doing the job, he will do a good job. He’s got a lot of knowledge, is very experienced and understands all three formats,” Ponting was quoted as saying according to a report on The Indian Express .

Dravid was appointed the coach of the India A and the U-19 teams, and the latter reached the final of the U-19 World Cup in January-February earlier in 2016. He was then appointed the mentor of the Delhi Daredevils franchise, with Paddy Upton as coach and former team-mate Zaheer Khan as the captain.

Delhi, who had finished among the bottom-ranked teams for the last two editions, have produced a major turnaround in the ongoing tournament, and are currently in the race for the playoffs.

Dravid had earlier mentored Jaipur-based franchise Rajasthan Royals, before it was suspended from the tournament along with Chennai Super Kings for the ninth and tenth editions due to charges of corruption against its team owners.
