Obscene cartoons: Man RM20,000 poorer

SEPANG: A graphic artist was fined RM20,000 in default five months' jail by the Sessions Court here Thursday for selling online obscene cartoons on his website last year. Judge Harith Sham Mohamed Yasin imposed the fine on Yunus Hasyim Yaakub, 29, after he pleaded guilty to the charge by using the website at http://www.gazelleone.net to provide obscene form of communication for commercial purposes to the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) officer Hairul Anuar Mat Nor.

He committed the offence at the MCMC Network Surveillance Department, Level 6, Menara SKMM 1, Jalan Impact, Cyber 6, Cyberjaya, Sepang, here at 11.07 am on Aug 13, 2015.

He was charged under Section 233 (2)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which carries a maximum fine of RM50,000 or one year's jail, or both upon conviction.

According to the facts of the case, Yunus Hasyim was found to have been selling obscene cartoons which he produced to clients who registered to his website with a membership fee of RM30.

The clients would then be requested to purchase an online payment card, MOLPoint or Pay Pal, at any convenience stores and send the pin number and the card's serial number to Yunus Hasyim before they were given a password to surf the website.

MCMC prosecuting officer Mohd Sophian Zakaria prosecuted, while Yunus Hasyim was not represented. – Bernama
