Outside Poes Garden, AIADMK chief J Jayalalithaa's residence, party workers were sporting bizarre clothes, haircuts and just about everything distinctively not haute couture — but highly amusing nonetheless.
Some party supporters had shaved their heads bald but for the AIADMK's twin-leaf symbol, others had the symbol in body paint, on tattoos, earrings and gold chains. The party's colours were everywhere, on flags, umbrellas, caps, T-shirts and saris.

Early morning at the DMK office, party supporters were in a jubilant mood as counting gave their candidates leads in several constituencies. They triumphantly and burst fireworks and danced to drums. By mid-morning, as news filtered out AIADMK's lead, the mood became despondent. Before long, the only cheerful people bustling around were tea sellers, who did roaring business on the day. Till evening, DMK members waited for a glimpse of one of their leaders. But no one, not party chief , not treasurer M K Stalin, not Kanimozhi showed up at the party office.
