When asked about the Saradha scam and Narada sting, Mamata on Thursday brushed away the poser. "There is no corruption in Trinamoool," she said. The issue certainly did not make any dent in the party's tally.
But Madan Mitra, who had the dubious distinction of becoming the first candidate in Bengal to contest the Assembly election from behind bars, lost.
Candidates who figured in the Narada sting did win but the victories were far from convincing. In Ballygunge, Subrata Mukherjee's margin was down by 26,000 votes. Mayor Sovon Chatterjee, who had a margin of 48,173 votes in 2011, won by 16,658 votes this time from Behala East. Partha Chatterjee, whose image took a beating just ahead of elections following allegations over his PhD, saw his winning margin from Behala West seat crash by over 50,000 votes.
Even in a safe seat like Rashbehari, Sovandeb Chattopadhyay's victory margin fell by 35,000 votes. In Bhowanipore, where chief minister Mamata Banerjee had won in 2011 by 54,213 votes, she had to be content with half the margin this time. Deepa Das Munshi lost to her by 25,301 votes.
There were the odd few who bucked the trend. In Metiabruz, Abdul Khaleque Molla nearly tripled the victory margin. The party also recorded higher margin in two other seats, Entally and Rajarhat New Town. But the victory margins were under 3,000 votes in both.
