The people of the city got together to celebrate the 174th marriage anniversary of Maharani Laxmibai with Raja Gangadhar Rao on Thursday.The two had tied nuptial knots on this day in 1842.

Jhansi: The people of the city got together to celebrate the 174th marriage anniversary of Maharani Laxmibai with Raja Gangadhar Rao on Thursday. The two had tied nuptial knots on this day in 1842.
A procession was flagged off from Laxmi Vyam Mandir. It resembled a traditional Marathi 'barat'. After taking a round inside the walled city, the procession ended at the historic 'Ganesh Mandir'.
This temple was built in 1764 by Shriram Bhau, father of Gangadhar.The marriage ceremony was performed in this temple. Laxmibai got her new name after the marriage. Before it, she was known as Manikarnika alias Manu and used to live in Bithoor.
On Thursday, a ceremonial wedding was performed. People from all walks of life attended the ceremony. They demanded to renovate the temple, which has such a rich history. Temple committee secretary Gajanand Khanwalkar said, "Irrespective of caste or creed, the people attended the function and paid tributes to the gallant queen."
