Hassan girl has been offered a free seat, besides monetary benefits by many private colleges

J.S. Swathi, who secured the second highest marks in SSLC, now has a tough task on hand: of selecting a college for further studies from among the many private colleges in Hassan and outside that have offered her a free seat, besides monetary benefits.

Swathi, daughter of a daily-wage worker with the Department of Telecommunication Department, secured 624 out of 625. Born at Jakkanahalli, near here, she studied SSLC at CKS Girls’ High School in Hassan. She stayed put in her grandparents’ place here to attend the school. Swathi created history in the school by scoring such high marks.

Cash award offer

After the results were announced, authorities of private PU colleges started contacting her family with an offer of a free seat. Satish Kumar, Swathi’s cousin, a lecturer in a private college and who has been her guide in the education, told The Hindu , “Almost all private colleges in Hassan called us and offered a seat. A college in Bengaluru and one in Chitradurga also called us. The SRS PU College in Chitradurga offered a free seat, besides a cash award of Rs. 1 lakh, appreciating her achievement in the SSLC,” he said.

The other private colleges in Hassan told the family that they would give her free seat and also assured to extend financial assistance for her higher education. “College authorities told us that they would bear the first year’s fee if when she gets into either medical or engineering course after PU,” Mr. Satish Kumar said.

‘It’s her wish’

“It is her wish. We are not putting pressure on her to secure a rank in PU too. We want her to study in a decent college and secure good marks enough to get into a professional course,” Mr. Satish Kumar added.
