DMK’s R. Jayaramakrishnan and Congress’s V. S. Kalimuthu dashed the hopes of AIADMK to repeat the clean sweep achieved in the district during 2011 elections.
While AIADMK candidates won Tirupur North, Tirupur South, Udumalpet, Palladam, Avinashi and Kangayam constituencies, Mr. Jayaramkrishnan came out triumphant in a last minute dash at Madathukulam and Mr. Kalimuthu won the Dharapuram constituency beating the sitting MLA K. Ponnusamy of AIADMK.
During 2011 elections, the AIADMK candidates won seven seats and its then alliance CPI (M) won Tirupur South constituency. In a keenly looked contest in Tirupur North constituency, AIADMK’s .K. N. Vijayakumar comprehensively defeated DMK’s former Minister M.P. Saminathan, who had thrice represented his party in the Assembly. The victory margin was 37,774 votes.
All the winners from AIADMK shot into lead from the beginning and gradually widened the lead. However, both Mr. Jayaramkrishnan and Mr. Kalimuthu were trailing in the beginning and bounced back later to register the victories.
