NDMC advisor murder accused Amir Alvi has an alibi: He was in Bulandshahr, ‘campaigning’ for uncle

Amir Alvi, one of the men arrested on murder charges for the shooting of New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) legal adviser Mohammed Moin Khan, has an alibi backed by an uncle who is a Samajwadi Party candidate for the 2017 Uttar Pradesh polls.

Mohammad Mustaquim Alvi, the SP candidate from Bulandshahr, said Amir was in the constituency till 5 pm Monday. Khan was shot at about 7.45 pm Monday. “He had helped me in campaigning for 10 days. We can give proof he was in Bulandshahr till 5 pm Monday, after which he left for Delhi,” said Mustaquim.

The distance between Bulandshahr and Delhi is about 81 km and bus travel takes nearly two-and-a-half hours, while travelling by a cab or two-wheeler might be slightly faster.

Amir’s mother, Salma, insisted her son was not in Delhi when Khan was shot. She said he had arrived at their house in Jamia Nagar at 10 pm Monday. “Police came at midnight and took him away. He has been charged with murder, but I believe he was not in the city (at the time of the crime) then,” she said. Salma said Amir already has legal hassles because his wife has moved court levelling dowry allegations.

“He came on 16th (Monday) night as there was hearing in a court the next day,” she said. Salma claimed Amir did not have any previous crime record. Family members said they own a gas welding and water plant shop, where Amir works. Amir married a few years ago and has a two-year-old daughter.

Police have also arrested Amir’s neighbour Anwar, and Bilal in the case. Bilal’s house is barely 100 metres away from the other two accused. All three accused are in their early twenties.

According to Delhi Police, Amir is a “local criminal” of Jamia Nagar. He was roped in by one Sameer for Khan’s murder, said police.

“As per their plan, Amir, Bilal and Anwar carried out recce of the house of Khan,” DCP (southeast) Mandeep Singh Randhawa had said after the arrests. He added that on Monday “one of the assailants broke the glass window of the car and fired” on Khan and escaped.

Anwar’s family said he had a case against him related to keeping stolen gold. Anwar’s mother Zillay Huma said he had completed Class XII three years ago and started supply of RO filters in the locality. “He is an active earning member of our family. He wanted to pursue B Tech, but had take the responsibility as his father was not fit,” she added.

Bilal’s brother Wasim said police came to their house in the early hours Tuesday. “Initially, police told us Bilal had stolen two bikes. Bilal was not in the house. He had gone to a relative’s house for a funeral.” When Bilal returned, we took him to the police station, said Wasim. He said Bilal does embroidery work.
