District coordinator of Mahila Samakhya, Basanti Pathak, today criticised the Central Government for the closure of the centrally-funded Mahila Samakhya programme.

Pathak, while addressing a press conference here, said the Central Government’s decision has rendered countless workers jobless and without monthly income.

“The gender-based programme, aimed at empowering women, has fallen on bad days due to the disinterest being shown by the Centre. The programme that commenced in 2012 is to end in 2017 but the government has already taken a decision to withdraw itself from the project,” said Pathak.

Pathak said that in the neighbouring state of Uttar Pradesh, the programme had been amalgamated with other similar programmes so that it could continue uninterrupted, but in Uttarakhand due to political uncertainty and the Central Government’s disinterest are forcing it’s premature closure.
