Shamrock Rovers striker to take hiatus from football after revealing battle with depression

Drennan, 22, released a statement via Facebook today detailing his three-year bout of depression that has compelled him to walk away from the game for the time being.

The Kilkenny native, who has represented Ireland at U21 level, had previously played in England for clubs including Aston Villa, before returning home. He is currently in his second season with Rovers.

Subsequent to Drennan’s statement, the club released one of their own, expressing full support for the player.

Drennan wrote that he has been considering such a change for a considerable length of time, and the he intends to seek professional help.

“I’m taking time out of football because I’m not happy and I’ve been suffering with depression for the last three years. I thought I would have dealt with it better then but it’s come to a point now where I need to leave and take a break.

“I just want to be happy because life is way too short. I need to be around people I love and get a job. I needed something to change. This is a very tough decision, one I’ve put my whole life into and hoped to be successful in, but it’s not one I’ve made over two weeks.

“I just want to come back and get the help I need to get back on track, and would like to go back playing in the League of Ireland at some stage if the chance came up. I want to thank everyone who has given their best to support me and make this difficult decision.”

In their statement, Shamrock Rovers wished Drennan the best of luck.

“Mikey has the full support of all his colleagues and friends at the club; we wish him the very best and hope to see him back soon.”
